A Voice is found within the medium

After having spent three and a half years at SUNY Oneonta studying fine arts, I found it challenging to be in a world that is rapidly becoming engulfed by the digital realm. Was my choice to specialize in traditional medium a suicide attempt in the new age of tablets and pens without ink? I feared this was true upon post-graduation.

There are a few reasons I’ve changed my mind since.

The simple beginnings of a completed digital piece have its roots reaching down past the circuit boards. The makings of every successful artist have started with pencil and paper. My ability to fluently draw and create in this way makes it easier to embrace the traditional arts, while using technology as simply an aide. I no longer see the need to convert to the digital as a hindrance.

I also find the beauty I seek to create is something that must be both executed by hand as well as seen. I personally find no solace blending colors on a screen. While I believe there is more room for control and easy re-working on a computer program, I’d like to maintain the importance of the actual mediums I use in my art. I yearn for the flawed waterline or the accidental mark on the page, for these imperfections challenge me and are beauty in and of themselves.

All of the art you see on my website is created traditionally, for there is something to be said about the stories and meanings I can create with my mind, and the stories that the ink will create itself.
